Bridge Structural Geometry

HNTB Corporation

Jacksonville, Florida

I had some bridge geometry experience at Intergraph Corporation where I certified the InSpan Bridge Geometry calculations.  Cambers, haunches, etc.

The bridge department at HNTB did not use InRoads in any extensive manner but needed some clearance reports.  Because of my background, we decided to use InRoads as part of the geometry check processes.  The Bridge Engineers dictated to me, I ran InRoads.

This was a great project, I was glad to participate.  I would recommend, though, that one should have a Subject Matter Expert learn new software (if it's a complementary discipline) rather than have a software operators learn a new discipline.

I would make that recommendation more strongly today because the integration between software disciplines is much tighter than before.  Speaking for Bentley's software, most disciplines reside within a Common Data Environment: no translations necessary.  BIM philosophies provides a common expectation regardless of software and Bentley provides a similar user interface for these related disciplines.  OpenRoads/OpenBridge are tightly integrated and learning software is easier than ever.
